Fire protection systems for hospitals in Saudi Arabia

Fire detection, alarm and suppression systems for hospitals and clinical buildings, installed to the project specification and coordinated with the ceilings, shielding and services they pass through.

How fire protection works in a hospital

Fire protection in a hospital has to work for people who cannot evacuate quickly, so hospitals rely on detection and compartmentation as well as suppression: detectors and alarms give early warning, sprinklers or other suppression control a fire, and fire-rated construction and fire-stopping keep smoke and flame within the compartment where they start, which lets staff move patients horizontally to a safe area. Shielded rooms add a complication: every sprinkler pipe, detector cable and duct that crosses a lead or RF shield must do so without leaving a gap, and every opening through a fire-rated wall must be sealed. EGC installs fire protection systems as part of its healthcare contracting, coordinating routes and penetrations with the shielding, ceilings and other services, and testing the systems before handover to the requirements of the project and the authorities.

Fire protection is coordinated with healthcare HVAC, medical gas and the shielding it passes through.

Where we install it

  • Hospitals and medical cities
  • Clinics and day-care centres
  • Imaging departments
  • Operating theatres
  • Laboratories and pharmacies

What we install

  • Fire detection and alarm systems
  • Sprinkler and suppression pipework
  • Fire-stopping of penetrations through rated walls and floors
  • Coordination with fire-rated doors and dampers
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Handover documentation

The layers of hospital fire protection

The layers of hospital fire protection
LayerWhat it does
Detection and alarmGives early warning and tells staff where the fire is
Suppression (sprinklers)Controls the fire until it can be dealt with
CompartmentationFire-rated walls, floors and doors keep the fire in one area
Fire-stoppingSeals every pipe, cable and duct penetration through rated construction

How we deliver it

  1. Review the fire strategy

We work from the project’s fire design and the authority requirements.

  2. Coordinate routes and penetrations

Pipes, cables and openings are coordinated with the other trades first.

  3. Install

Systems and fire-stopping are installed to the specification.

  4. Test and hand over

Systems are tested and commissioned, then handed over with records.
